The obvious choice is oatmeal or fruit smoothies. Steel cut oats mixed with different fruit combos are my go to but it is all about variety for me. I like smoothies but I like them more as a snack than a meal. (probably more of a mental thing but baby steps people..) So I needed/wanted a change. For me, Cream of Wheat was one of my favs as a kid – cream of wheat mixed with tons of brown sugar and whole milk. How’s that sound? YUM!...How's that sound for vegan/gf? Not.so.good…
So I thought I would try something different – Quinoa Flakes.
Now…I am not a huge quinoa fan. Don’t know why but the nutty flavour at dinner just creeps me out a bit but I thought that at breakfast was more appealing. Turns out it was good: Quinoa flakes+raisins+soy milk+small amout of brown sugar = UN-oatmeal breakfast and a delicious option.
The hubs has been the bomb with trying/adapting new things but apparently this did not go over well. His trying it was the same reaction Buddy the Elf had to trying fruit spray perfume. or I am assuming how I feel about broccoli - gross and unnecessary.
Not going to lie..it was kind of funny to see his reaction. Makes me want to come up with some other combos.
Got any GF/Vegetarian suggestions?

Hum...I've never heard of Quinoa Flakes before, but like you, this might be a good option for Breakfast (and agree, not dinner!). I'm sort of a creature of habit...it doesn't bother me to eat my bowl of Kashi Go Lean cereal every morning and a banana...but I do want to try this! Thanks! :)
I eat Greek yogurt ( I presume that is gluten free ) with granola. Maybe you could try the flakes in Greek yogurt to make them more palatable??
I'm an eggs and veggies girl in the mornings. Lots of veggies. It really fills me up and is SO good!
Don't worry, the day tanks from there on out!
I've really been thinking about non-bread (wheat) options lately too. Thanks for the suggetion - I might try it.
So... I shouldn't share with you that I had Frosted Mini Wheats for breakfast? Oh.
I'm a big fan of quinoa for lunch/dinner, I've not heard of it in a breakfast. Sounds good/interesting, and worth a try. Thanks for sharing!
I've never eaten Quinoa myself...still stuck on the bagels for breakfast. It's great that you guys try new things...
I am always saying I am going to try Quinoa for breakfast, and now you are reminding me to just do it! Variety is key to keep it fun.
I have never tried Quiona, I am kind of afraid to. I love cream of wheat to and my oatmeal. I am trying to cut back on the amount of bread I eat and what kind of bread I eat. It has to be whole wheat. Thanks for sharing.
I haven't tried quinoa flakes yet maybe I should look for them on my next grocery run. I really enjoy egg whites and veggies at breakfast when I have th time to make it ;)
oatmeal is my go-to breakfast in the winter. I love the warmth when it's chilly out!
Hmm, there are lots of vegetarian options, but vegan is tough! Have you ever had congee? Not my favourite, but in China, my students loved this rice-based breakfast. You could probably find it at an Asian supermarket. (I don't like it, but 1 billion people do...)
I just got on to quinoa. I love it! I had it the other day with pb in it. SO GOOD. I ran with the nutty flavor.
Breakfast I normally do one of the following: pb and banana, cottage cheese and jam, coffee (this is not a good plan), crackers and hummus, overnight oats (which is my fave).
agreed i'm not a huge quinoa person. i am however a massive egg fan and that breakfast with say a gluten free piece of toast is pretty awesome
Great idea. I recently bought some quinoa flakes, but didn't know what the heck to do with them. I'm going to try them for breakfast! Thanks!
I make granola out of a combo of quinoa flakes/oats (organic oats are often gluten-free). In the crock-pot, mix your oats/flakes, applesauce, maple syrup, cinnamon, nutmeg for 2 hours. (stir every 30 min). Then add extras like currants, raisins, coconut, millet puffs, sesame seeds, etc. etc. for another hour or so.
Very yummy, and fills me up! I usually buy red quinoa flakes as well, to add a bit of variety :)
Check out this website: http://www.food4celiacs.com/ShopOnline/NTP/index.html for more breakfast options:) I just had a bowl of the Mesa Sunrise w/Almond Milk and it was d'lish!
